DIY work carries risk
DIY work can cause injury, damage, flooding, fire, and electric shock. You must judge your own ability, use personal protective equipment, and stop and hire a pro if a job is unclear, if something is damaged, or if what you find does not match the guide.
Manufacturer instructions and local code win over any guide on this Site. The guides are general to the United States and are not a substitute for your local code or permit office.
Permit and gas work
Permit work and all gas work are not DIY jobs on this Site. Hire a licensed pro. For those jobs, this Site gives a pro recommendation and typical costs only, not step-by-step instructions.
Gas safety
If you smell gas, hear hissing, or suspect a leak, do not touch switches or light anything. Leave the building, call your gas utility emergency line or emergency services from outside, and do not try to find or fix the leak yourself.
Water and electricity
Know where your main water shutoff is and test it before you start. For electrical work, switch off the breaker, verify the circuit is dead with a tester, and hire a licensed electrician if you are unsure. Never work on a live circuit.
